Why CCTV Alone Won’t Keep Your Business Safe

Why CCTV Alone Won’t Keep Your Business Safe

August 11, 2022

Many business owners, both new and experienced, are led to believe that installing CCTV is the only, ‘must-have’ way to keep their trading business and staff safe from crime. However, this is not necessarily true – as criminals find new ways to avoid being caught, businesses also need to adapt to technological advances that will make detection of criminals more certain.

When CCTV first entered the market nearly 30 years ago, we were sold the story that criminals would simply see the camera, assume they could be easily identified, give up and flee the scene – no robbery, no loss, no damage… but this has not proven to be the case.

Cameras used by some businesses have poor resolution and most are placed in the wrong spot, meaning the footage captured provides no help with identifying or prosecuting the criminal. So if CCTV cannot accurately identify the criminal, it has got me asking…..What is the point?

Businesses also tend to overlook the fact that CCTV can malfunction, be hacked, vandalised or only capture a particular angle, predominately from the ceiling pointing down. Add a cap, sunglasses and facemask and it becomes virtually impossible to identify the perpetrator and the main reason why criminals are not deterred by this technology.

Robbery is now the second most reported crime in Australia, with retail crime, such as shopping, robbery and vandalism, costing Australian businesses up to $9 billion each year and puts their staff and customers at risk of harm.

A 2021 survey of Australian retailers, found the pandemic did little to curb the threat of organised retail crime, noting a 69% increase from the previous year.

Our greatest take away from this: One piece of technology, simply cannot provide the level of safety a business and its community need to remain crime free.

So, what is the solution?

Bolster your security system by combining CCTV with DNA Guardian. This powerful combination of technologies will strengthen the Police’s capacity to irrefutably identify and prosecute the criminal when apprehended – the CCTV footage gives police an idea of who they are looking for, and once found DNA Guardian gives them the indisputable evidence required for a successful prosecution. Over the past 13 years DNA Guardian has successfully been used by businesses all over Australia and NZ to either eradicate crime or significantly reduce their incident rate. DNA Guardian has successfully been used in court to put these criminals behind bars.

DNA Guardian is easy to integrate into any business setting and simply uses unique DNA technology to forensically mark and tag the criminal during the crime, placing them at the exact venue, at the time when the crime occurred, eliminating any alibi.

Once thieves become aware of the installation, 98% of the time they will move on to a softer, easier target that relies purely on CCTV.

Our client testimonials prove our system works.

To put it simply, CCTV provides too many loopholes for criminals to exploit and cannot deliver the strongest security results needed to keep businesses crime free. If you are a retail business, it is time to amplify your existing business’ security system with a stronger deterrent that gives you the ability to link a criminal to the crime and provide the forensic granular detail CCTV cannot. DNA Guardian seamlessly integrates with any businesses’ current security system, is incredibly cost effective and delivers powerful results that CCTV cannot on its own.
